True to its title, The Craft itself is an exercise in necromancy of a sort: an attempt to exhume a tired old teen-horror film theme -- the outcast adolescent who exacts revenge on her tormentors by means of special powers -- then resuscitates it with heavy eye-liner and black-from-head-to-toe-alternative appeal for its Clearasil-encrusted MTV demographic. Unfortunately, there's not enough fresh meat on its bones for it to stand. Sarah (Neve Campbell), an angst-ridden high schooler fresh off a recent suicide attempt, is the new girl at St. Benedict's Academy, an exclusive Los Angeles parochial school where all the young ladies have money to burn, not to mention attitude. She soon finds herself designated a social misfit and subsequently falls in with three other kindred spirits (who are, of course, much prettier and hipper than their persecutors): Nancy (Fairuza Balk), who lives in a trailer with her stereotypically boozy white-trash mother and her stereotypically lecherous stepfather; Bonnie (Neve Campbell), who feels inferior in the looks category due to scarring on her back and arms (fortunate for her, since the audience wouldn't be expected to like her were it her face instead); and Rochelle (Rachel True), an African-American who is ostracized because of her skin color. Little does Sarah know that her three new friends have chosen her as a "fourth corner," the final link in their witches' quartet. Together they tap into the powers of the four elements to turn a wimpy jock into a puppy, heal Bonnie's scars, and cause a bigoted Aryan girl to lose her precious flaxen locks. However, they keep reminding each other (and the audience), "whatever you give comes back three-fold," and as they begin to delve into darker aspects of "the craft," their magic backfires. Eventually, Sarah decides she wants out, but the others have a different idea. In the end, what each one gives does indeed return three-fold.
