The comedy in Happy Gilmore is pure low-brow slapstick with a few dark twists thrown in for spice. Happy is a lousy would-be professional hockey player whose father was accidentally killed watching a hockey game. Since his mother abandoned father and son years before, the "orphaned" Happy is sent to live with his grandmother, whom he adores. He still keeps trying out for the team and when he fails he beats the coach to a pulp, for it seems that Happy has a real anger problem. More trouble comes when Happy discovers that the IRS is planning to seize his grandmother's home because she owes $270,000. He has no idea how he can help her until he is out on the golf driving range one day and hits the ball 400 yards, straight to the hole. Former golf pro, Chubbs, becomes Happy's teacher. Chubbs' career abruptly ended when he accidentally tangled with an alligator in a water trap. His challenge is to improve Happy's short game, which stinks. Meanwhile a rivalry between Happy and nasty golf pro Shooter heats up. Among the highlights are the flying-ball's-eye-view camera angles and the scene in which Happy beats up gameshow host Bob Barker.
